Petition to the UK Government to Consider Applying the 250g Weight Threshold to the Extended Restriction Zone Around Airports

On 18 January 2019, the UK Department for Transport deleted the initial exemption of drones weighing less than 250g from the new extended restriction zone around airports and updated it to apply the restriction to all small drones regardless of any weight threshold. We urge you to join this petition and ask policy makers to explain why such change is deemed necessary.

Under the new rule, anyone who operates a drone outdoors, even a very light drone weighing less than 250g at a height no higher than their own head in their own back yard, would need to report to Air Traffic Control (ATC), if the operation is within the extended zone around airports. While many airports throughout the UK are located close to residential areas, this will place an enormous burden on ATC, leading to a waste of resources for no appreciable safety benefit.

Meanwhile, 250g is defined in the upcoming European Drone Regulation as a weight threshold for the product category with least risk. Flying a drone with a weight even less than 250g should not be viewed with the same risk as flying drones weighing up to 7kg.

We agree that operators need to make safety and the respect of other airspace users their utmost priorities, and that therefore certain spaces, such as airports, should have additional restrictions in place. However, we are very concerned about the inclusion of drones weighing less than 250g, as it unnecessarily restricts the use of very light weight or even toy drones that pose negligible risk.

Sign up to this petition and express your concerns about this change to drone regulation. Let policy makers know that responsible drone users are raising their voice in favour of proportionate rules!

As a supporter of drone technology, I believe the inclusion of drones weighing less than 250g in the new extended restriction zone around airports is unnecessary. It will place an enormous burden on Air Traffic Control for no appreciable safety benefit and flying a drone with a weight even less than 250g should not be viewed with the same risk as flying drones weighing up to 7kg. I urge the Government to explain why such regulatory change is deemed necessary and to consider applying the 250g weight threshold to the extended restriction zone.
